Many interesting and key events take place during the summer. The festive season begins in July with the theatre festival Volterra Teatro, continues in August with a series of jazz concerts Volterra Jazz and concludes with the pageant Volterra A.D. 1398 which unfurls through the medieval streets of Volterra from the last Saturday in August until the first Sunday in September.

An opportunity to savour medieval cooking, music and songs.

On the first Sunday of September the Astiludio, the medieval flag-throwing tournament also takes place and on the second Sunday of September the Palio at Pomarance.

San Gimignano Footrace – Volterra

The “San Gimignano-Volterra”, is more than tradition.  It started long before the running and marathon boom.  This event is open to all athletes who belong to FIDAL. UISP, CSI, ACLI, ACSI or other acknowledged sport associations and military groups respecting the agreements drawn up with FIDAL, for those holding valid sports activity cards or a medical certificate valid for competitive sport.

The 30 km route winds its way along a course amongst some of the most suggestive areas of Tuscany, with its historical characteristics and landscapes.

Naturalistic paths

The Val di Cecina is testimony to thousands of years presence of human activity in just one single piece of countryside.  The antique settlements which are still visible today dot the landscape with strongholds and antique “Castrum”, on the higher hills, the villages, the parishes and the rural dwellings.

Within this context there is a tight network of paths and antique trails which allow you to discover this very suggestive uncontaminated area, giving you the perception of natural rhythms, mans size, which fill this quite untouched area.
The Natural Reserves of Berignone-Tatti, Monterufoli-Caselli and Montenero are part of the Natural Reserve of the northern part of the Val di Cecina system.
This systems of hills alternates well with hiking paths and didactic routes which allow you to reach and visit magical and unique landscapes such as Masso delle Fanciulle along the middle part of the River Cecina, or the Rocca Sillana and the Castello de Vescovi, a medieval fortress rich in history, which can be reached after a good walk amongst the sharp rocks and soft hills.
